Pre-employment

Questionnaires and medicals

The recruitment process is fundamental to the success of your business and Black & Banton help you to get it right first time. The efficiency of your pre-employment processes also demonstrates to recruits that your company values their health and safety.

At the recruitment stage, Black & Banton help you to:

  • Assess your prospective employees’ fitness for the requirements of the job
  • Understand the requirement for health monitoring in relation to a particular job
  • Recommend, where necessary, any reasonable adjustments to the work content or environment that may be required in the light of a medical condition or a disability as defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

We use a confidential, online pre-employment health questionnaire which is screened by an occupational health advisor. Where necessary, follow-up telephone interviews or face-to-face medicals are conducted by occupational health specialist practitioners or physicians. A certificate of fitness to work (with or without restrictions) is then issued prior to start-date.

We also arrange executive pre-employment assessments, psychometric testing and Criminal Records Bureau checks at pre-employment stage.

Additionally, we perform pre-employment assessments which are required by law for the following groups of workers:

  • divers
  • fork-lift truck drivers
  • PSV/HGV drivers
  • pilots
  • construction workers, including those working with lead and asbestos
  • workers using vibrating equipment
  • individuals working with ionising radiation
  • off-shore workers
  • permanent night-workers

Capability criteria

At the pre-employment stage, Black & Banton help you to reduce the risks to the business of employing individuals who may appear suitable but who in fact fail to meet all the requirements of the job.

We help you to analyse the requirements of the vacancy and establish a list of essential medical, physical, psychological and safety criteria which must be attained by the potential recruit in order to fulfil the requirements of the job.

Furthermore, the capability criteria remain a benchmark against which employees' performance can be monitored in circumstances where their health changes.

Substance misuse

Black & Banton can help you to establish drugs and alcohol procedures and provide both pre-employment and for-cause testing.

We work with Altrix (www.altrix.com/) to ensure that our drugs and alcohol testing is precise, cost-effective and legally defensible. Altrix uses the Intercept® system which involves a quick, dignified and simple collection process that is virtually impossible to cheat and is administered by our occupational health nurses.

Results are e-mailed confidentially to our clients within three working days, although some results require further analysis.
